08/24/2010 Overnight SCI

Hey guys, went fishing yesterday on the Freedom to try my luck at those homeguard yellows down in SCI. We got there around 4:15am and starting fishing with live squid. nothing happened until around 6:00am when the Navy kicked us out of the backside. We went around the corner to the front side and the water was dirty! The gentlemen next to me was fishing with clear line and it came back up gray after a few casts. Captain came out and said it doesn't look like it's going to happen there today so it's best if we head to Catalina and try there. After a 2hr ride up the line, we've arrived at the Vee's. Soaked bait for a while and nothing but big macks and perch. We moved up the line to find lots of GREEN water! The water was so murky and cold we just turned around and went to the front side. nothing bit at all throughout the day and a 5lb bonito took the jackpot.

the captain says that he will probably go out this weekend but he would have to start his routine all over again (ie: make bait, check different areas, find fish). Tommy was a real class act because even though the fishing sucked, he gave everyone a $50 discount for the next trip to make up for it. I don't remember too many captains that would do such a thing. Guess I'll be on the Freedom again soon! :P

Thanks for the report. The only thing I can add is that it is better than not being on the water. I fished the San Onfre area last Saturday and had my bait raked by a Halibut??; that was the only bite I had all day other than mackeral but it was still a great day on the water. There was so much sea life other than fish biting that it was a continual show. I think that the coastal waters are so full of krill that it is like a smorgasbord.

Does the Freedom go out Friday and Saturday night and from where? I might want to hit the islands in something other than a jetski in the next few weeks My back problems are still an issue so I have been staying local with the jetski.

If you haven't fished the Freedom, do yourself a favor and give her a try. The owner skipper will try till he drops to catch you fish. Its the best boat in LA COunty
