2/22/11 Surfperch Fishing at San Onofre State Park

Postby alanhighhand » Tue Feb 22, 2011 4:11 pm

Yesterday, my kids and I went fishing at Malibu for perch and there were a lot of people surf fishing there too. Seeing them, they didn't catch much fish and we only caught 8 baby perch. We drove down about 10 miles finding a new spot fishing there about 30 minutes and nothing happened. So we decided to go to Ventura, it was already noon, so my kids were already tired and only I fished. I fished about 45 minutes and still nothing happened, I believe the rain screwed up everything. And today I decided to go to San Onofre State Park with my friend. He told me it is good for yellow fin croakers and cobinas during the summer. I just wanted to try out and see what kind of fish I will catch over there. Around 8:00 a.m., we arrived there, prepared some things and started fishing. It was a nice weather and the waves were beautiful, a good place for surf fishing. Unfortunately, we fished there for 3 hours and not much fish catching 5 baby perch. Since they were baby, we released all leaving only one that is a good size. 8-)

This is the place:

If you guys know any good place for surf fishing please let me know, I will be there. Thank you. :D

Hi Allan,

I have always done quite well surf fishing at Calafia State Beach in San Clemente. I used to live right there in San Clemente, so i fished there 5 or more days a weeek.
just dont forget to bring plenty of quarters for parking.

The place I was fishing at is just next to yours, the parking is $15 per day. Joe what is the right month to go fishing over there. What kind of fish do you mostly catch over there?

We used to camp alot this time of the year at San Clemente State Beach and Doheny State Beach. I love to surf fish both of these beaches just above where you were at. Surf perch were often good and yellowfin croakers seem more prevalent at Doheny for me. San Onfre and San Clemente should have alot of Leopardsharks, Shovelnose, and Rays this time of year. I would just do a dropper loop with some squid and enough weight to hold it as far as I could cast in the the first break if possible.

I would also do pretty well at Bolsa Chica State Beach for Surf Perch and Sharks but have never done well at the beaches around Newport and Huntington.

I always thought that the Surf Perch were more fun than the sharks. I used to get up before anyone, make coffee, and fish the tide for hours..I miss those times.

It looks like you had a nice day on the water....a little cold though?

Thank you Hobie and Joe for your information, I like surf fishing a lot especially in the winter time, I enjoy it a lot. When you go out the waves make you feel relaxed and the scenary is beautiful. I always use light tackle for surf fishing and I never use the live bait. I am the kind of person that's not use to live baits. Most of the time, I use plastic lure, it gives you more of a sensitivity when a fish bites while reeling in. Its kind of cold during the winter but when you prepare the right clothes it isn't that bad. During the summer, when you go out on your jetski there are alot of fishing boats everywhere, its irritating. And for surf fishing during the summer, it annoys me when there are surfers surfing on the waves. They make it where there is not a lot of space to cast that is why I enjoy surf fishing during the winter time where these problems won't show up.

i fished long beach until there were no more halibuts left a few years ago. it used to hold so many halis in that area! if you want to see corbinas, try manhattan beach. that's where i used to go when there are sandcrabs around.

Thanks HS, if I'm not wrong Manhattan, Redondo, Long Beach, and Seal Beach have more pollution. When I go to these kind of places I will probably need to catch and release. But sometimes it is depressing when you catch the big ones you have to release them back. That is why I don't prefer these spots, I would rather go to cleaner ones like Malibu, Ventura, Laguna, and etc. Even though it is farther I don't mind.

That's true but the ones I listed above have more. Like Hermosa Pier, there's a sign that says You have to release the croakers back, they have poison CAN'T EAT! :(
