7-10 thieves at Dana Point

Postby HawaiianShorts » Sun Jul 10, 2011 2:15 pm

Went out solo this morning to Dana Point. Got bait and went to a new spot. I had dropper loop on 1 rod and the other a plastic. Got some huge sardine and good size anchovies. I guess the drain hole is too big so all the smaller chovies escaped. Oh well.. Dropped a sardine and 10 minutes later the clicker go off. Had the fish on for a sec and the hook pulled.. This happened all morning until I was out of bait!! every bait was bit but no hook up. So I called it a day at 11isb and went home.

Conditions were so so. Light breeze in the morning and water was around 64. Small swells but managed to cruise at 35.

Sucks you couldn't land any! I would have went out with you, but I worked yesterday night and got off a little late. At least you got to hit up the waters!

Last time out of DP I had the same problem in 30-40' of water. I sized my bait down and changed to #2 circle hooks and managed to hook up.

My raked baits turned out to be small 3-5' sharks. I good fight but not what I was looking for.

Speaking of sharks, I saw one jumped straight up in the air for a meal just like the great whites on tv. I can tell by the shape of the head and clearly saw the shape of the mouth. That was quite amazing to see!

Sorry I couldn't go. The irony is that I was in San Juan Capistrano all weekend at a lacrosse tournament. Just 15 minutes away from Dana! :(

Anyone going out this weekend? I'm going to be fishing off Newport or Huntington Pier on Friday, but want to hit up the waters on Saturday or Sunday!
