Catalina? Maybe next time...

Postby HawaiianShorts » Sat Sep 10, 2011 7:01 pm

Meet with a few guys this morning in long beach hoping to hit up Catalina. Well, wind was blowing with overcast skies made us second think the original plan. While in the parking lot, we were greeted with lightning and thunder.. plan B was to fish the horseshoe kelp but when we got to the breakwall, wind chops and 3rd mixed swells were just around the corner. We hung in there and tried to reach our spot. However, it was just not to be today.. I can't sit still to setup my gear! So on to plan C, fish inside the breakwall. Luckily, despite the occasional rain, we did manage a few fish. Rcracerlol was the hot stick with 3 calicos. The rest of us caught nothing but yellowfin croaker and lizard fish. Headed back in by noon. :(

Side note: while I was looking back at the group, I wasn't paying attention and a wall of water came over my head. I was submerged underwater for a good couple of seconds. It scared me a little because water just kept pouring down and I was running out of breath at this point. It was so bad that my front hatch and center compartment had water inside.. They are normally dry, even when I'm washing the ski. I wish someone saw what happened to me because I really had no clue. I'm guessing I was on the throttle shooting straight down into a swell.. and my phone got wet!! :x

I was hoping that you guys didn't cross when I started hearing thunder.

Good job making the decision to call it off...today was not the day.

Glad that your guys erred on the the side of safety.
I ended up taking my boat out of oceanside.
fished a little while at the power plant in San onofre.
Couple biters, and racked baits, but nothing stuck.
Headed into dana point for lunch, then a rough ride back hom.
There was red tide everywhere. I think it turned the bite off.
Not sure what the water temp was, but it felt much colder that it has the past couple of weeks.

I heard that the water was still nasty. We stayed on the beach in Laguna over Labor Day and you could see the like of red tide about 1 mile off shore. Hope it clears up over the next week...I am planning to fish your Halibut hole next Saturday.

Glad you guys made it out there.

I've never had my ski underwater that long before HS! Sounds a little hairy.

Icant wait to get out sometime soon.

Nice to meet everybody yesterday. Mark, thanks for the bait. We made the right decision not to go out farther. Jacky, glad you are okay (sounds scary the way you described).

I got some ideas now about the ice box :)
