Do yourself a favor, go into deep water and jump off of your watercraft. Climb back on it. See for yourself how you do it and then plan accordingly. If you are a big guy, you reall need to go through this exercise before you mount a barrier to how you may remount your watercraft. Food for thought.
I did that exercise and found that with any size rack on the back of my yamaha fx-ho that it was quite difficult if not impossible to reboard even while using the boarding step, if you had any rods on the rod holders. the only way to reboard was to actually take the rods out of the holders and throw them into the water(thus they need to be leashed) allowing you enough room to reboard over the rack and cooler. I actually found that the yamaha fx-ho was stable enough to allow me to reboard right up the side of the craft without flipping. (and I weigh 240 not including gear. This might not be a problem for anyone thats lighter than me. )So i found it was actually easier to just reboard side saddle. I suggest everyone do this safety exercise just so you know, cause you wont want to be trying to figure it out in the open ocean under bad conditions.
I also have noticed that if you were to fly off backwards off ur jetski and had a rack with fishing rods, where do you think your going to fly through? Exactly, those fishing rods!!! And heaven forbid you had any hooks or lures on them, cause now they are tangled in you, worsening your condition.. SO i'm actually looking into re modifing my rack so that it is wider and that the space for the rods are wider and at an angle that would allow a body to fly backwards through it with becoming tangled in the lines. Probably the optimun place for rods should be in front like jetski brian has on his sled, but i dont wanna drill any holes in my sled just yet, might wanna sell it later so keeping it stock and like new is a necessity right now.
