I launched at Dana Point at 8:15 a.m. This morning it was cold and little windy. I went to my fishing spot, and saw a few kayak fishermen. The water temperature was 61 degrees. It was sunny and the sky was blue very nice. I started fishing not even 15 minutes I got a fish on. I was busy all day the fish kept biting. There were a lot small ones. I was surprised to catch a fish that I never saw before. After I caught it I took a picture and sent it to my friend, and asked if I could keep it or should I release it? He said that I could keep it, and it was rare and excellent eating fish. So I kept it and continue fishing. I saw a kayak fishermen pass by me, and saw him catch a legal halibut. It made me so jealous. So I continued fishing until I ran out of bait then called it a day. I found out that the fish was called a Giant Kelpfish.
Wish I could have went! Very nice report Alan. I ended up going home a little late and had some issues with the local cops on my way home. They tossed my car around but didn't find anything so I was let go. I think they were training the rookies that night. Maybe if the weathers good next week we can go.
The fish was ok. If you want me to give you a score on it from 0-10 I would give it a 5. A sheep head is better. The kelpfish's skin was thick. The meat was also tough.
