How do you idle

Postby nolimit » Mon Sep 26, 2011 7:00 pm

I am new and trying to find out how you stop when coming in to dock. Is the ski suppose to idle very low or what. I know you can hit reverse but then what do you do.

Hi NoLimt.

The key to coming up to anything is doing it as slow as possible, stopping the engine if needed. ;) When your fingers are not on the throttle the engine will idle and barely move. When coming up to a dock you can either put the ski in reverse to slow you down or if you do not have reverse just stop the engine and restart it for manuvering. You just need to get out and try it, and use common sense.

Good luck!

how your jetski handles at idle really depends on the model. i remember trying to dock my friend's jetski and it was completely opposite than mine. but in general, i'd approach the dock at an angle. then hit reverse when it gets close and slowly ease into position. when you are close enough to reach the dock, shut off the engine and pull yourself in. get some bumpers if you know the docks don't have any rubber bumpers, otherwise it'll make some scratches when it bounces up and down.

I just play with the reverse bucket as I'm heading in to dock to reduce my idle speed. I pull the reverse lever just enough to reduce my speed down to 1-2 mph since my jetski idles around 5 mph it gets scary going into a trailer at 5 mph hehe

I really thank ya'll for the help. Yes I have been out and really enjoyed it, I was asking about the idle because mine idles
pretty high, but that is what I did shut the engine off. In time I will get use to it I hope.

My seadoo idles at 2300rpm and it moves pretty quick at idle. What I do is pull the reverse lever up a bit to a point where the jetski is slowed down.

All right, I thought it was all forward or reverse I did not know you could control the reverse by pulling a little or all
the way. Thanks allot

The "reverse" is really a flap that comes down in front of the exhaust. Think of it like the flaps on an airplane. The whole point is to great drag which in turn slows down the plane. The flaps on a jetski is essentially redirecting the flow of water. By forcing water to travel towards the bow, it pushes the jetski in the opposite direction. Therefore you are going in reverse.

Hope it make sense.
