Jet Ski Choice

Postby jcrew912 » Wed Aug 10, 2011 5:26 am

thinking about purchasing a Yamaha SUV 1200 for Jetski fishing but they are too old (I believe they were made between 1999-2004). However, they are the biggest/longest PWC that I know, are there any other PWC that are as long as SUV 1200 but newer? Thanks

Any reason why you need a long jetski? Most of us have a 3seater and that's plenty of space. If you get a used jetski, I'd say find something newer than 2005 with low hours. It shouldn't be that hard to find nowadays with the economy the way it is.

I'll be fishing with another person (likely my son) and thought that the SUV 1200 will be long enough after mounting a cooler rack in the back. What would be considered low hours? Thanks

a 3seater fits 2 people no problem.. if you both are average build. i think the Yamaha would be a better choice if you plan to fish 2 people. the seat is bigger and the jetski itself is a little wider. low hours means less than 30hrs (in my opinion).

I have taken my 12 year old on my 2 seater several times and it works out great. But a 3 seater is much more versatile. I have 1 of each.

Agree that 30 hours is low. I wouldnt consider anything over 50 especially in salt water. Hope you can find one.

I have also owned 2001 and 2003 yamaha 1200cc 2 strokes. Plenty of torque but the motors have problems.

I would go for a 4 stroke 3 seater.

I may have found a jetski, Yamaha FX HO. Before purchasing a jetski, do you guys get a survey done? How would you check the condition of the jetski? Thanks

If you are not very mechanical, I would suggest paying a good mechanic or surveyor some money before you buy. That money will either give you comfort or save you from a nightmare. What year Yamaha and how many hours are on the ski?

If you are mechanical:
1. Check the overall condition of the hull(top, bottom, inside) for stress cracks and visible condition. Use a flashlight and look inside hard to see places like intake grate etc.(look for hull damage and damage to impeller do to rocks etc.)
2. Do a compression check on the engine.
3. Has the ski been in saltwater? Check for corrosion inside the engine compartment. Look at the mounts and hard to clean areas to make sure that there is not rust and saltwater corrosion.
4. Drive the ski before you buy it to make sure it runs good and everything works.

Good Luck.
