Jet ski Tuning tips?

Postby Fishkilla » Fri Dec 23, 2011 12:27 am

I am new to the world of jetski and jetski fishing. I have a 2004 Yamaha xlt800 and want to get the most performance out of it. Especially since i am gonna be adding some extra weight to it with equipment i plan on adding. What seems to be the easiest mods to perform to get some more HP's out of my pwc? Ive been looking at spark plugs and maybe an air filter upgrade any other recommendations?

what kind of equipment are you planning to add? as a general rule of thumb, more weight = more fuel.. and more HP means even more fuel. how far do you have to travel to get to your fishing spots?

Well I want to add a cooler and some rod holders. That's about it. I live in Tampa and I mostly do flats fishing but now I want to venture out and start trolling the gulf a couple miles out. Nothing extreme. Well at least for now. I want to also add a depth finder in the future. Does this require an extra battery or can I just run it off the factory setup? Thanks for the help.

You should definitely run a second battery for electronics. I got a sealed battery from frys to run a fish finder. The only down size is that when battery runs out, no more fish finder. However, you can install a automatic charge relay to charge the second battery when the main is full. This way, you can run everything all day as long as you start the engine ones in a while.

Dude, don't worry about the extra weight, you will probably not be adding that much. On my setup, I have added more weight to my ski than most people here, and on my Yamaha FX140 3 seater, I can hardly tell the difference. I've probably added over 150lbs (50lb battery, 50lb platform, 40lb trolling motor, plus all my fishing equipment and electronics). And like HawaiianShorts said, you're just going to suck more gas, and for fishing there's no need! These things have plenty of power and performance as-is.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll leave it alone. I was worried because i dont have the most powerful jet ski but definitely efficient enough to get the job done.

Remember, STOCK is most reliable when it comes to the 2-strokes. I am not a fan of factory oil pumps as they are known to fail and lines have a tendency of popping off, so the only mod I would recommend doing is the bypass and run pre-mixed fuel.

I have never done it on a Yamaha, but there is a kit available.

SBT has one and is close to you.
