Jetski Fishing for Sheephead 10/25/11

Postby alanhighhand » Tue Oct 25, 2011 5:50 pm

I launched at Dana Point at 8:15 a.m. and I saw Mike come in. So I checked with Mike and he said he wanted to go out and find a thresher shark. So I went to go fish for sheephead. Nice weather and water temperature was 64 degrees. I just fished at this spot for 3 1/2 hours wide open. You can call this a honey hole and I saw Mike pass by during the fish on. I don't know what to say , all I got to say nice trip. Hope you guys enjoy the video.

Here are some pictures too:

Very nice post, pictures, and video. It was great meeting you today Alan, even though we didn't get a chance to fish together. I got too caught up in trying to catch a Thresher. Next time we will have to fish for sure. I need to learn how to catch them sheepheads! How far do you usually go down in the kelps and which weight and hooks do you use?

My fish count today:
3 lizard fish (biggest i ever caught or seen)
3 calico bass (2 decent size, 1 small)
1 sandbass (large)
1 halibut (juvenile)
0 thresher
0 sheephead
All fish we caught and released.

Nice to meet you too Mike. Some day we could fish together because your day-off is the same as mine. For the shrimp bait, you just use the body only with out the head. For fishing sheepheads, you need to use 30 lb test line because this fish is freaking powerful, once you get hooked the sheephead starts pulling you down like crazy. Both of my hands are all tired and numb from gripping so much on the fishing pole. I lost like 2 or 3 fish. I used the 4/0 hook size and 3-5 ounces weight because it's only 40 to 50 feet deep only. Fishing inside the kelp pads, you need to prepare a rope to tie your jetski to the kelp so you won't move, a paddle because sometimes you can't start your engine since there's seaweed around you, you need to paddle out. Keep in touch, future plan.

Depending on your taste, if you like soft fish meat then this is the fish. Since I'm a picky eater and if you ask what score I would give this fish from 0-10 I would give it a 7. One thing I know when you buy this fish at the supermarket that's live fish it costs $12 per pound. If you eat at most Chinese Restaurant it costs $16 per pound.
