JetSkiFishing the Kelp (SoCal)

'brand new to this site, so please excuse the sooper-noob questions: It seems like jetskis would be the best platform from which to fish the kelp - faster and smaller than bigger boats/faster and better range than kayak (!) - BUT how do you fish the kelp without the kelp getting sucked into the engine?

Also, for those in South Santa Monica Bay/PV area, how is it riding our frequently large swells and nasty wind chop? and then fishing in it?

I have a 140cm kayak oar on board for navigating inside the kelp. I often find pockets inside the kelp and tie up; it is much easier than anchoring a boat. The oceanside gang are experts at drifting the kelp beds. Be careful about running your motor in heavy kelp; same problem as a boat.

As far as weather conditions; you have to pick your days on the ski just as on a smaller boat. I had a 15' center console a few years back and I will say that a ski is more ocean worthy than the small center console was. This year has been less than favorable so far in terms of conditions. It is August with May/June conditions; maybe we will have great fall conditions that seem like summer.

Yeah G-man the water was cooold, but remember you went swimming twice when the tow strap broke. The north county boy's have a trick for getting out of the kelp, throw iron over a clear spot to the next kelp and pull yourself out.But don't pull straight, pull side to side just in case it pull's loose. :o We don't need no stinkin' paddle...
