Joe's Halibut Hole 9/17

Did a run from Dana Point to Joe's Halibut Hole. It usually produces something; you just never know what.

The weather was for smooth seas in the am and chop in the afternoon. As usual, the weatherman is full of crap. The ride out was windy and a rough. The afternoon was picture perfect and a ride home at 45mph.

This season is sure weird. I caught a baby red rock fish in 50' of water around the spot that produces halibut. I thought it was a sculpin at 1st and could not believe that I caught a rock fish. This was followed by three lizard fish so it was a time for a change of tactic. Those things are nasty.

Fly lining a anchovie produced a 6' thresher shark and a nice show. A couple of jumps later and he showed me why you need a wire leader. I switched to plastics and managed 3 sand bass, a sculpin, and a barracuda.

It was a perfect day on the water; the trick was staying away from the red tide. By next week the red tide should be cleared up and it is time to work Joe's spot again. I was the only one there today.

No pics, was too busy fishing. I wish someone else was there to record the Thresher because they sure know how to put on a show.

Wow.

6' thresher? From a ski none the less is bad ass, Hobie!

Good job. Bet that can be one heck of a fight on light line.

It is your spot, I was just borrowing it.

The thresher wasn't much of a fight on 15 lb. test but a nice show and a screaming reel. I knew that I was beat when I saw him jump.

After being beat down by West Nile for a month it was really sweet to feel better and be on the water. Maybe we can meet up in a week or two and try it again. That spot produced halibut last fall...maybe again this year?

Sounds like a great day on the water! How about a Catalina trip on the 24th (next Saturday)? It's supposed to be hot all week!
