Need help with the fish finder?

Postby linesix » Thu Jan 26, 2012 6:43 pm

Hi Guys,

please I need some help to find which fish finder should be right for me. I mostly fishing inshore and soon will go abit off shore for jigging.

Jetski Yamaha VX18R 2011 (bought brand new 1 yr ago).

The quetsion is will the transmit work through the hull? I heard they need minimum 300rms power output?

I dont think will need gps coz i read that they use alot power and drain the batteries. I got iphone gps.

- Garmin echo 500c (500rms) $350
- Garmin echo 200c (300rms) $200
- Lowrance HDS 5 w/t gps (250rms?) $600 - $700 O_o

help which brand model is good? i dont want cheap or expensive.

Many Thanks

Regards

The lowrance is a great unit and Academy has them on sale right now. But the Garmin's are also good units. They will work thru the hull, you might have a spot molded on the inside of the ski for mounting a transducer.

I have a Lowrance HDS-5, this fish finder is really helpful to use. Especially when you use it in shore and out shore.

You should always use a second battery for electronics. I run a second battery for my VHS radio and Fish finder/ GPS . IMO its just safer ( not sure if thats a word). I don't want to be stuck out at sea with a battery drained cause I used my electronics with out the engine running.

The imagining works best for freshwater or shallow water if you use it in the ocean.

Okay, Today i just pick up the unit HDS-5 GPS transducer 50/200khz

Im having abit trouble where to place the transducer inside the hull. There plenty room at the front engine bottom. The rear engine there no room and hard to find a flat spot.

I dont want to install the transducer out the back hull with mount on it.

Have you guys had any experience on how to install the transducer inside the hull? i bought a silicone clear. Friend of mine told me not to use epoxy coz it will be hard to remove it.

See the ski side view where the red colour transducer will be like this.

I think you have picked the right place to mount it inside. But looking at the back, you can mount it on the bottom of the swim step. All you need to do is drill 2 holes on te swim step bracket. Very easy and quick.
