New from Chile

Postby chileanjk » Mon Dec 26, 2011 7:26 am

Hi guys, I'm new, I live in Chile, I like to beach fish and boat fishing I found your site googling, as I was checking a bombardier seadoo to come back to water, I had to sell a yamaha a few years ago and now I can come back, so I was looking for ideas for the seadoo, and found this great idea of fishing on a pwc, my yamaha wasn't stable to do fishing, but the seadoo looks very stable, I went to see it, and this week I will try it in the water, there are two seadoos, one with turbocharger and one without, obviously I want the turbocharged one. I have a few questions, I hope you can light me up, first, what's the use for the cooler? beer? or fishes?, are you trolling with the pwc engine? why so much rod holders? I have seen pictures with as much as 15 rod holders!! How far do you go offshore to fish?

What I was thinking:

- 2 Rod holder
- Cooler???
- GPS and Fishfinder ( fishfinders alone are cheap, but GPS is a must, scare me to get lost offshore)

Any thing missing?

Welcome, you don't necessarily need to buy the whole expensive metal frame kit, but it does make life easier. I personally use a cooler with everything attached to that, and being that when I am trolling and something hits, the drag takes the impact of the fish hitting and nothing gets any excessive wear.

I have a handheld Garmin Colorado 400c GPS, as well as an iPhone with Navionics Marine GPS software.

Here is a pic of my setup..

I would say avoid the turbo ski if you are looking for reliability. But if its speed then by all means go for it. Louis's setup works, but Ill be interested to see how durable it is over time. I have a aluminum rack whick limits my cooler size but I dont need to worry about the stress on it. Having 15 rods on a jet ski is ridiculous. Me and louis both normally only bring 2 or 3 and a gaff. with limited space everything can get tangled pretty easy. Best advice I can give is go out and give it a try, you will very quickly learn what works for you and what you need to modify for your particular type of fishing....

I have a seadoo rxt supercharged with 160hours and everything is holdin up well. But if the supercharger breaks, it'll cost $500 to replace with an OEM part. However, seadoo replaces for free within 3 years.

The reason I mention it is because if you had a regular engine, say seadoo gtx or Yamaha fxho, all you need to worry about is oil change and spark plugs. And you'd get better fuel economy!

As for the cooler rack and space, it really depends on what you like to do. Instead of a cooler rack for a live bait system or fish storage, you can put a few scuba tanks and spear gun. Sky is the limit! All you need is to get same PVC pipes and start building! After a few trips you should have a better idea of what you want to bring and how you want to arrange equipment. Then I would recommend finding a local welder to build a rack with aluminum (doesn't rust in saltwater).

Check out the garage section for some tips and the reports section for ideas! Good luck!

Thanks, for your responses, so the cooler is for live bait and fishes, I work in a big truck garage so I have access to aluminum welders and equipment.

hard decision with or without turbo, the turbo version has a few other things, adjustable handle bar, etc., pictures:

All of that is great, but has nothing to do with fishing. So its a matter of preference? The way I see it, it's just more things that can go wrong and needs to be replaced. Hope it helps!

I will say this and I am sure I will rustle some feathers, but Honda makes the absolute worst PWC, there's a reason they were discontinued, there are some people out there that have had good luck, but being in south florida, everyone and their mother have a PWC, so I see more than the average person. They had computer issues from the start, then problems with wastegate actuators sticking. My friend made the mistake of buying a left-over 15x and has had nothing but problems with it, from repeated knock sensors being replaced to it fouling plugs in cyl #3 and it's bone stock. I bought a 2004 Aquatrax R12X from the original owner for $2600 and flipped it within a week for $4000, that's the only reason I bought it.. LOL..

Best ski in my opinion for this is a Yamaha VX (best gas mileage out there and best reliability), Yamaha FX140 or FXHO, and a Seado GTX 155 (Non Supercharged) I personally do not recommend a 2-stroke for doing this because their poor fuel economy and if you idle around too much you will foul the plugs.

Last year I made a trip from Washington to Orlando, then to Miami and back to Washington, a lot of watercrafts in the water and stored in racks, but I didn't see to much PWC's, I wanted to fish in the Miami Seaquarium but they don't let me

My wife didn't like Miami so we leave after two days  .

I think Yamaha and seadoo have the most reliable jetskis. The difference is style and a few parts inside. But as far as maintanence and such, both are very simple. You can't go wrong with these 2 brands.
