New or Used

Postby Toold128 » Wed Feb 22, 2012 11:22 am

This whole idea of jetski fishing is new to me so I have a lot of questions and need opinions. Most of the times that I have seen people on jetskis, they have been what I would call "hotrodding". Taking into account that I am 60 yo and partially disabled, would I be better off with a new jetski or are they reliable enough that a used unit would be dependable. I do not plan to be making many or any 20 mile trips out. Any sure way to know if one has been abused.

This subject may have already been covered. If so can someone point me to the discussions.

Thanks, DT

Well the big thing you would need to look at 1 would be the hull to make sure theres no deep gouges in it and look inside to see if visually it has been taken care of. Now the tough thing is to be able to find out if theres corosion on the inside, now if they will let you take it to a mmechanic to check it would be good but that would obviously come out of your pocket.http://www.youtube.com/user/garylandgraf3?feature=mhee

Hey Toold128, you didn't mention what your size was, but unless you are 300+ lbs., shouldn't matter too much. 3 person rides are the bomb! I don't know what your disability is either, but if you are like the rest of us, most likely it is mental. That is what makes this sport an easy fit. (Hope I didn't offend anyone!) Ok, back on track, New or Used? I guess my first question that I would ask myself is, " Am I fairly mechanically inclined?" Next question I would entertain is: "Am I good at 12V DC electrical trouble shooting?" and third, " Do I have the time and ability to deal with minor mechanical malfunctions?" If you answer "yes" to those 3 questions, you probably have enough knowledge and wherewithall to pick a good used ski. If "NO" then go with a new ski if your budget can handle it. I'm a poor "Redneck" and have learned to make things work, and as age and experience have bestowed itself upon me, I have learned to even make it look good too!

i would go with a new Yamaha FX HO model just to be hassle free and best value. the FX HO is larger than the other brands for sure. it's a very stable platform and it's very easy to maintain. Unless you want to go 55mph+, the FX HO is all you need. the beauty about fishing from a jetski is that you are your own captain. you go where you want to go and when you want to go. you won't have to wait for long boat rides or not being able to get close to structure. with the gas prices still soaring, it's the cheapest way to get out there!

I'm offended just because I am mental doesn't mean I don't have feeling.

Welcome Toold128,
I'm the type that thinks your never to old. If I might suggest I would most likely go and rent a ski and try it out. See how you like it and if its a possibility for you. That way you don't invest allot of your time in shopping a ski. Maybe rent a couple different types. Heck if your ever down in Corpus give me a shout out. I would love to let you try out my ski and see what you think of it.

Thats actually a great idea to rent one first. Give you a chance to get the feel before taking the plunge. I think used is a great way to go. I would look for a late model 4 stroke and definitely get it checked out by a mechanic. You should swing by a dealership as well and talk to a salesperson to get educated on different features and the maintenance.
