New to jet ski fishing from New Mexico

Postby Sitefish » Fri Apr 09, 2010 7:48 pm

I have Fly fished for most of my life,mostly for freshwater game.About 18 years ago I went bonefishing--that was it -flyfishing the flats.At 63 years young,it is like starting over for me now with a Jet ski.I'll give you alittle history:
For years I’ve owned many boats for flats fishing in Texas and Florida, mostly fly fishing in the flats. About 16 years ago a friend and I were fishing the flats north of Padre Island.We heard a sound about half mile away and closing. It didn’t sound like a boat and we really couldn’t see what it was. Well, it was a jetski, man and woman and a small little pontoon towed behind it with tent ,dog and a lot of camping gear..Friend and I laughed and had a few jokes for awhile,then we looked at each other and said “WOW THAT WAS COOL”. Never thought about it much since then,until a few months ago.
I’m going to get a PWC for fishing. Runs pretty shallow, plenty fast, cheaper than a flats boat, less gas. PERFECT! I found A 2007 Yamaha Waverunner with low hours. Googled PWC fishing, Jetski fishing, etc. Got a few ideas plus I had a few of my own. I like building stuff, drilling, welding etc Makes me happy. So here is my rig. I think it’s going to be OK, What do you think?
* Dash has-VHF Radio ,Fishfinder, powerful spotlight by Ram,Bildge pump control panel
* Saddlebags
* Adjustable rope for drift sock on both sides
* Zinc Anodes below the jet
* I modified a cooler carrier(a lot of mods)
* Trolling rod holder between the seat and the hand rail,(rocket launcher)
* Holds 3 Fly rods-5 conventional rods
* A few engine Mods
* 45* jet spout-get the spray away from everything-works great
* non-skid tape front to back on rails
* rope cleats on front top rail
* 750 gpm auto bilge pump--In case you forgot to screw in the plugs
I tried to mount a thru the hull transducer—did not work for me. Here is a picture of it.

welcome. Your ski soounds like its gonna kick ass. Cant wait to see some pics.. Im new to this stuff myself so i really couldnt offer any suggestions but the big kahuna's like torpedo, hawiian shorts, the fishing sho, rigstoreefs,aquaman,majorpain, etc etc should be chimming in soon. and they'll give u lots of feedback. In the meantime browse through the garage section it gives lots off DIY's and such.

this is a very nice setup! only thing i can think of modifying is re-route the water sprout to the cooler. this way, your bait will have nice freshwater while it is in transit.

looking forward to your reports! :D :D

after admiring your jetski for a while, just realize there's a drift setup on the side. that's a BIIIGGG plus!! i'm not a big fan of setting anchors. i'm actually working on a detachable drift sock mechanism, much like our bait tanks where it requires no drilling on the hull.

thanks for sharing!

I have never used bait,but maybe in the future? I'm not a purest by any means,But I do like topwater poppers with a flyrod---very very additive.Thanks for the comments.
Someone is looking over my shoulder--saying--DO NOT INCOURAGE HIM!!!-I have alot pictures of some fishing mods if anyone is interested..I'm just having a bad time posting them The URL thing.Can't find a good image hosting site?

So...no live bait means that the cooler is filled with beer? Now that's a concept!
