Newbie Help in San Diego

Hey Guys,

Been following your site and sport for about a year now and ready to jump in! Got to say you are doing some cool stuff here!

I am familure with Ski's, boats, free diving, tuna fishing etc however looking forward to somthing a little more chalaging then taking my boat out off shore.

Years ago I was in the Freeride Watercraft Association and did the tour around so.cal. riding sitdowns, specifically a gp1200. I loved the 1200 however am guessing I need something a bit bigger. What is everyones recomendation on ski size, power etc? Whats going to be the best when it comes to range?

I do have a 2001 Sea Doo GTS with the gutless 717 in it. Would this work or should I look at something more capable. I am guessing I dont need a lot of power however just dont know. What do you think? If it will work, I can start outfitting right away.

How far off shore do you go and how often? I am usually off shore every weekend during tuna season however I would like to mix it up a bit with a ski. Is there a core group of guys going offshore each season? I'm guessing Mushroom Bank is possible but does anyone push it that far? Also, does anyone mix it up with freediving when there out there?

Ive never pulled a slead so am not sure what type of speeds you travel. Oviously it is up to the conditions however whats your average cruising speed when you head back assuming you have some afternoon wind. Also how does the bait do being in such a small craft and banging around out there? Is it tough to keep it alive?

I am sure I have a ton of other quesiontions to come.

Thanks for the help and looking forward to fishing with you this coming season!

Hey Predator. Did you ever get in to the sport? I didn't see any replies.

I am in a similar situation. Been riding the socal coast for years but would love to start fishing. Working on rigging my '07 Wake and '09 RXP

Hey Mejorpain!

Went up to the Fred Hall show and talked to a few guys from Honda with the skis outfitted. Ive got that older Skidoo but just dont want to jump into it until I get it planned out. Want to do it right! Also, need to find some people that will run offshore with me. Lets hook up and figure out how to build out our ski's. A division of my company is a fabrication and machine shop so fabing the bars is basic!

Hey Torpedo,

Sounds great! Working on dialing in my boat this week and then will start on figuring out the ski next week. How far offshore do you go I would think 30-40 miles would be nothing! Beats getting up at 2 am driving down to the ramp, setting up launching, waiting for bait then the long haul off shore! Ive watched you guys skirt in and out of SI like its nothing!!! Dealing with the idiots launching down there gets old. Plus all of the clean up.

Thanks,

Ryan

Ryan...

I mostly launch out of LB and fish the surrouinding waters including catalina island with plenty of gas to spare. I fished coronados once last summer during the yellowfin run. From dana to nados in 20 minutes. Let me know if ya need help setting up.
