Since i heard that the weather was going to be terrible, and that the party boats we cancelling trips and coming home early, i was very affraid to go out today.
Went to Oceanside with the plan to hitting the kelp between there and San Onofre. Went out past the jetties first to see the conditions before i bought bait.
Water was a little bit rough, maybe 4 foot swells here and there. Loaded up with a half scoop and headed north. "dines were ok. Little beat up but not too bad.
Got to spot 1, and drifted thru the kelp. couple short biters. Drifted into next kelp and hooked up to a barely legal calico bass. Went around and drifted thru again. got 4 short calicos. went a bit more north to right in front of the power plant. Drifted for halibut for about 2 hours. Nothing.
It was kinda cool watching the Marines from camp Pendleton work. They were using 4 helicopters and Amphibious vehicles and one of those bad ass cushion hover crafts to unload stuff from a carrier anchored off shore. they were droping bomb on the range too. Scared the heck outa me a couple of times.
Came back to go back to the kelp. Couldnt find it on the way back. I think i was too close to shore. Turned around again and went till i found it. Went throught a few drifts. Picked up 2 more 3 lb calicos.
All in all i got 6 calicos. Lots of bait in the water. Porpoises all over too. Sun came out late in the morning. Got pretty warm.
Towards the end, alot of the bait was dead from riding so hard in the swell.
Nice day on the water. i am feeling a little crappy now from rocking all day.
My budget bait tank worked well. Just gotta modify and change a couple things.
Looking forward to Saturday at Dana Pt.
