POLL: How far offshore would you go?

Postby Coast2Coast » Tue Aug 16, 2011 4:52 pm

So here's the big question- Given you took all the reasonable safety precautions and extra fuel, wingman, etc... what is the furthest you would ever take your PWC offshore on a good day?

i agree with Alan. 40miles max. remember, mileage drops exponentially in rough waters and strong current. if you have 90mile range on 1 tank, you'd get about 70miles riding in chops.

Remember when i took my chaotic ride to the coronados and rock pile...
that ride, there and back from Shelter Island was 76 miles. and i thought i was going to run out of fuel on the way back.

Although its only 25- or so mile to the rick pile, that is to say you are going in a straight line. but throw in a bunch of 15-20 foot swells, and that 20 miles becomes over 30 miles.

conditions are definitely the limiting factor.

Hi all, Im up there with similar feedback, Ive owned an FX 160(1100cc) FX HO (1.8) and SHO's all capable of doing 40 mile off shore depending on conditions. The FX HO's have an average of 100 miles range...

Thanks for the feedback guys. It helps bolster my confidence going in the right direction. If I cant get to blue water I'm like why bother?? But that's just me. Now I just got to get the FX HO. Might need to add an extra GAS TANK!!

An extra tank will increase your pwc range but factor in the toll on your body. 100 plus miles in a day is a haul even in calm water. It's not like riding in a boat.

Maybe in my younger years it would have been an adventure to go further and sleep offshore but a bed on solid ground and one tank of gas is far enough for me. Catalina is as far as I go!

This is my next boat...I want to be the last one to leave the dock...the first one at the fishing grounds....and back in time to sleep in my own bed!! I am thinking leave at 6AM, fish Clemente Island, and be home for dinner!! Anyone want to come along?
