Surf Perch Fishing at Ventura

Postby alanhighhand » Mon Jan 24, 2011 8:17 pm

Tomorrow, me and my BUDDY will go to Ventura and check it out. One of my friends told me that Ventura was the best place to go fishing at this time right now. He also showed me a couple of pictures on his cell phone that looked big. I hope I will be able to catch some fish like that tomorrow. I will post some pictures as well if I catch fish. 8-)

I woke up at 5:00 and my friend came at 5:15, after eating my breakfast, we left at 5:30. All the way to Ventura we went, no traffic at all and got there around 6:45. Prepared some things and started fishing, all the way to 9:00, there was no bite and I saw my friend get attacked by the wave. His clothes were soaking wet, then about 10 more minutes, I got a fish and a big one too. Nothing happened until 9:30 so I decided to go to another spot. From the previous spot we drove about 3 miles down, and found another spot fishing there. A couple of casts out and we got some fish, until 12:30. Not bad, a nice fishing trip, my friend got 7 and I got 10 surf perch my limit released 5 fish.

My uncle used to take me to that area of Ventura when i was a kid.
He taught me to fish with sand crabs, using an ultra lite trout rod with 2 lb test.
It was alot of fun catching those perch. That was before they had a limit on them.
Fishing the surf with 2 lb test is a blast. Especially when you tie into a 5-6 lb corbina, and
it takes you up and down the beach a couple of times. People would always think i was crazy fishing so light.
But, you cant beat the fun factor.

you should try to pull on a 43" shovelnose on 6lb test! i was in a shovelnose tourney a few years back and one of the rules were 6lb test only! it was fun for the first 5 minutes then it was just pain after...

Joe, your uncle is a good fisherman he taught you well, in surf fishing sand crabs and bloodworms are the best bait to use. You can use those baits to catch more perch, cobina, or other fish. People see you use a 2lb test line to catch those cobina up and down and they think your crazy, if I see it I would be really proud of you, its not easy. I've been fishing surf for a long time and never seen a person do that. Cobina is one of the stronger fish on surf if you catch one, they go up and down or left to right but it's not a good eater. If you really do catch a cobina, it would make your day. It's one of the thrilling moments of your day. Cobina is my target for summer fishing, ocean side is a good spot. Do you want to join with me to ocean side during the summer to regain your memory? ;)

Absolutely Alan,
I would love to do some surf fishing with you this summer. Just need to let it warm up a little bit. When i was a kid, i could stand in the water all day long. Not any more. Now, i think 65* is cold.
I have caught more perch than i can count, and corbina, although they are rather elusive, are a total rush to catch. especially when using ultra light gear.
I have eaten corbina too. i would just filet them and cook them up with the perch. all tasted the same to me.
Just let me kow when
