Surf Perch Fishing

Postby alanhighhand » Mon Jan 17, 2011 3:59 pm

My kids and I went to Zuma Beach for surf fishing. We were searching for the Barred Perch. We woke up at 6 a.m. getting gas and buy breakfast at ampm. And stopped by at my daughter's friend's house and pick her up. Got there around 7:30, preparing and teaching them how to fish and cast. We fished there for an hour, only a small bite nothing big. I walked by there and saw a old man that caught one gigantic surf perch. I haven't seen such big surf perch in my life, if i'm not wrong the fish was 16 inch. Since there was no fish, I went to another spot taking about 10 miles and tried to fish there about 30 mins. And this spot there was alot of SEAWEED, so I was really disappointed for not having my kids catch any fish. Then we went to another spot, and this spot FINALLY GOT A BITE! There were alot of fish but small ones, my kids became happy and we were all smiling. KEEP FISHING for about 2 hrs, a happy ending and came home. :D :D :D

These were the fish we caught:

Good job finding those fish. Sometime they can be difficult to locate.
Looks like you had nice pretty weather too.
Looks like the kids had a good time.

if you have problems with perch, use either the Berkeley Gulp Sandworm in Camo or get live bloodworms!!! those bloodworms are instant catch!

Hawaii thank you for your advice, I have no problems with the perch just the location, It's most important. I've been fishing these perch for a long time, from live bait to plastic lure and jerkbait. According to the book, incoming tide is the best time to fish these kind of fish, even though it is the best time sometimes they don't really work. For sure in my experience, if you go to the beach and see the sandcrabs, guarantee there will be alot of surf perch around that area.
